True Roots Consultant Summer Lewis was invited to speak at the Rotary Presidential Peace Conference during the Rotary International Convention in June 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The Presidential Peace Conference featured keynote speakers Bernice A. King, chief executive officer of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations. Together with non-profit leaders, policy makers, educators, and representatives from global institutes for economics, health, and peace, experts joined together to discuss sustainable peacebuilding.

In late May, more than 300 youth leaders from every state in Mexico attended “A Stronger México: Pillars of Positive Peace,” a 2-day intensive training on the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP) groundbreaking peace measurement tools. “Women and Globalization” Course (Online)

Over the past 15 years, True Roots consultant Summer Lewis has worked in the field of international development, with significant experience in the coffee value chain, fair trade, and gender. Based on her expertise, she created and teaches “Women and Globalization,” a course examining contemporary economic and political globalization through the lens of the coffee value chain. In following a cup of coffee from seed to mug, and the women and their families that make it possible, students are asked to reflect on how globalization has impacted the coffee supply chain, development, and women.

“International Development” Course (Online)

True Roots consultant Summer Lewis designed and teaches the online course, “International Development,” based on more than 15 years of experience studying and working in the field in more than 30 countries. The course provides a “real world” perspective on international development via contemporary readings, podcasts, videos, as well as interviews with professionals in the field. Students learn about the theories, actors, and evolution of international development, cooperation, and aid, while analyzing trends and critiques.

True Roots Consulting Group offers customized donor trips and learning tours in Latin America, connecting individuals, nonprofit organizations, and businesses with innovative development projects “at origin.” True Roots hosted a learning tour with members of the Rotary Club of Duncan Daybreak, British Columbia, Canada. Club President Keith Grey contacted consultant Summer Lewis after reading about True Roots’ work in the Rotarian Magazine. Keith and his club expressed interested in supporting a meaningful project in Oaxaca through a Rotary grant—but wanted to see the project first-hand, with the goal of establishing a long-term partnership.

In 2016, True Roots hosted a strategic planning workshop with the French Alliance, a nonprofit organization operating in Oaxaca for more than 40 years. At the moment, things are changing in the global order of French Alliances, and the Oaxacan branch must also change in order to survive.

As such, True Roots consultant Summer Lewis presented, along with Rotary Peace Fellow and Rotarian Jorge Meruvia, on the Global Peace Index and the Mexico Peace Index at the closing plenary session of the Rotary District 4185 Conference in Mérida, México. Summer and Jorge were selected in early 2016 by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) to serve as Global Peace Index Ambassadors.

Project Diagnostic for School for Special Education (San Miguel de Allende, México)

True Roots provides project assessment services for businesses, nonprofits, and individuals looking to build a program from the ground-up, or to shift directions with an initiative already underway. As such, True Roots carried out an assessment for the School for Special Education (Escuela de Educación Especial) in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a school for the deaf currently supported in part by a Rotary Foundation global grant. These grants support international activities within Rotary’s areas of focus—projects that address community needs and that have sustainable, measurable outcomes.
